Plenary Presentation: #Using Eye-tracking Technology on Research in Reading Strategies of Second/Foreign Language Learners
Presented by Associate Prof. Dr. Pei Lin Liu, National ChiaYi University (NTNU)
This plenary paper will first discuss two research studies that use the eye-tracking
technology to investigate the influence of language learning strategies on the learning
of English as a Foreign Language in Taiwan. The first paper discusses the influence of
morphological instruction in an eye-tracking English vocabulary recognition task.
Students enrolled in an English course and received either traditional or morphological
instruction for learning English vocabulary. To investigate the effects of morphological
instruction on English vocabulary learning, all participants completed an English vocabulary recognition task. Fixation time and path during recognition were recorded with an eye-tracking device. The results indicate that participants who received morphological instruction were able to read and inferred unknown words with greater success.
The second study examines the influence of the concept-mapping learning strategy on learners performing an English reading task. Eighty-six freshmen enrolled in English courses participated in this control-group pretest-posttest experiment, and received either traditional or concept-mapping instruction for learning English reading skills. The results of independent t tests, in which eye-tracking data on fixation time and fixation path were used, indicated that the participants who received concept-mapping instruction exhibited shorter fixation times on the core concept and other content in the text, compared with the group that received traditional instruction.
Using these studies as examples, the paper will further explain how eye-tracking technology has enabled deeper insights into learners' reading strategies which is not possible through usual research methods such as questionnaires, interviews and think-aloud protocol. Pedagogical implications of this type of research in the field of Second/Foreign language teaching and learning will also be discussed. Learn more.
